HefmA recognises good practice

The third annual Health Estates and Facilities Management Association (HefmA) awards have taken place, celebrating the hard work and dedication of those delivering services.
At a gala dinner, held last night at the Park Inn hotel in Heathrow, four awards were given to those viewed by the judges as most worthy.
HefmA president Bill Murray said all those nominated should be proud of their achievements: "Since their inception in 2007, the HefmA Awards have been acknowledging and rewarding both individuals and teams of people who have been making a real difference within the NHS Estates and Facilities Management profession, which in turn improves the services we are able to offer to our patients.
"On behalf of HefmA I would like to say a big thank you to the sponsor's of the awards, as without their support events and initiatives like these would not always be possible."
The Outstanding Service Award, which Murray described as prestigious, went to Andy Proud, head of estates at Leeds Teaching Hospitals. His dedication to those around him and those within the wider estates and facilities circle, was cited as the main reason for his win. Murray said Proud is hugely respected by his colleagues, in a career that has spanned 38 years.
Training Initiative of the Year went to the Northern and Yorkshire Assessment Centre for their commitment to bringing apprentices through and developing their management skills.
Facilities Management Team of the Year was awarded to the Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust, who has managed to transform standards and turnaround performances across the Trust.
Other winners were Robert Wilkins, operating catering manager at Great Ormond Street Children's hospital who won Project Manager of the Year and George Hood, divisional director of estates, facilities and clinical support at City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust who took home the award for Facilities Manager of the Year.
Murray concluded the evening by praising the four winners and urging people to get involved next year: "I would like to take this opportunity to thank the nominees for taking the time to nominate your colleagues, but my challenge to all of you is that we have nominations for every category from all eight branches for the 2010 Awards."
