The NHS urges people to sign up to apprenticeship scheme

As part of National Apprenticeship Week 2010 (1 - 5 February), the NHS is encouraging people to think about ‘learning and earning’ on a NHS apprenticeship scheme.
In the past year, over 150 people started a NHS apprenticeship in the region and a further 200 places will be available in the coming year.
NHS organisations employ apprentices in health and social care, business administration, motor mechanics, pharmacy, dental nursing and estates roles such as decorators, carpenters and heating engineers.
The two year NHS apprenticeship schemes offer a mixture of on the job training and structured off the job learning, resulting in a recognised qualification and most importantly, equip people with the necessary skills for a career in the NHS.
Dr Moira Livingston, director of workforce at NHS North East said: "By using apprenticeships we are meeting the government's drive to raise standards, reduce social exclusion and address future skills shortages.
"We are also meeting the pledges within the NHS Constitution to offer staff 'the right to development, training and support to do a good job'. People don't necessarily need qualifications to gain a place with us - what we are looking for are people with the right attitude who are enthusiastic and willing to learn."
