HefmA Awards Revealed
Since their inception in 2007, the HefmA Awards have been acknowledging and rewarding both individuals and teams of people who have been making a real difference within the NHS Estates and Facilities Management profession, which in turn improves the services we are able to offer to our patients.
This year received a record number of entries, which made the judges deliberations very difficult.
The first award presented was the Training Initiative of the Year - sponsored by Meridian Health.
Finalists were:
- Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust
- Hull & East Yorkshire NHS Trust
The award went to Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust.
Speaking after the award was announced, Susan Brown, hotel services manager, said they were absolutely delighted at the award win.
We work great together as a team. We have been working together for twelve years and are a mixture of in-house and out-house. Success is all about team spirit, looking at leadership from within and working towards common goals.

- Kay Lawton - Deputy Head of Facilities, Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust
The winner of the award was John Potts of Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust
John was surprised at his win. He says the team he worked with was absolutely brilliant.
How many people get to do, probably their best bit of work, as the very last work that they take on. I’ve never worked with mental health facilities before but the needs of the patient are much more complicated and what I really enjoyed was the complex needs. It is really nice to be recognised for doing a good job.

His achievement culminated in the completion of a joint procurement project under a single PFI contract in 2009, comprising two facilities; an £18m Mental Health and Learning Disability Unit and a £12m Community, Children, Outpatient and Diagnostic Centre.

The winner of the 2010 HefmA Facilities Team of the Year was Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust.
After formally competing against a number of private sector companies this team won a 3 year contract to deliver services to 21 PCT premises. The team embarked on a number of initiatives to improve, expand and raise the profile of their business.
We're so pleased for the hospital and for everyone involved in the project which involved about 200 people.
We were asked to look at customer care and produced a DVD which looked at how to improve the whole experience for patients. We showed bad practice and good practice and then got the staff to look at themselves and evaluate the best way forward and how we want to be.

The Finalists in this category were:
- Sylvia Causer, Facilities Matron, Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
- Craige Richardson, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust
The HefmA Facilities Manager of the Year was picked up by Craige Richardson from Leeds Teaching Hospitals. 
The judges felt Craige had a “can do” customer-focused approach and a personal commitment to self-improvement make him a worthy winner of this award.
The final award, and the culmination of the ceremony was the Outstanding Service Award. The Award was sponsored by HefmA and presented by Tim Litherland, National Chairman.
In the citation for this awards, Tim Litherland said: “This award goes to an outstanding professional who has contributed significantly to the estates and facilities profession. We were looking for an individual that has given many years of dedicated service to the estates and facilities profession as well as being pro-active within the Association and the recipient of this award has done just that.
The winner of this award, Ian Cox.
Ian has recently retired from the NHS after 39 years service. He is a well respected, senior professional who has demonstrated a vast knowledge and experience, of estates and facilities services. During his career he has made a significant contribution to the development of many new building projects and has been instrumental in developing and delivering high quality services in those buildings which impact on the safe and effective provision of patient care.
In closing Bill Murray called for worthy nominations to start to be considered now, as the competition was expected to be just as impressive for the 2011 HefmA Awards.
