Lansley hits out at BMA

Health Secretary Andrew Lansley has accused the British Medical Association (BMA) of opposing “every important reform” of the NHS since its beginnings over 60 years ago, said a report in The Independent.

The BMA’s campaign to have the Bill withdrawn appears to be waning as the Royal Medical Colleges’ support lessened. Lansley went as far as to accuse his critics of “spreading lies” according to the paper.

The Minister said in a speech

Look back to 1948 when the British Medical Association denounced Aneurin Bevan as 'a would-be Führer' for wanting them to join a National Health Service. And Bevan himself described the BMA as 'politically poisoned people'. A survey at the time showed only 10% of doctors backed the plans... but where would we be today if my predecessors had caved in.

A summit meeting of the Academy of Royal Colleges, due to take place yesterday, was boycotted by the Royal College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. Both colleges said that they would not call for the bill to be scrapped but rather seek to work with the government to overcome their “serious concerns.”
